Our History

CyMath started in Fall 2020 as a math tutoring project for grade-school students. Prof. Namrata Vaswani from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECpE ) started the program in partnership with colleagues from the School of Education (Prof. Christa Jackson, who is no longer with ISU, Prof. Mollie Appelgate, and Shari Miller, Program Coordinator for ISU 4U Promise). The goal is to significantly increase the number of students capable of entering computing-based majors, most of which require a solid grasp of mathematical concepts. Our tutors are mostly graduate student volunteers from Engineering and Mathematics who provide school–year-long virtual/in-person small-group Mathematics support and challenge for participants.

CyMath 1.0: Fall 2020 – Spring 2022

Our first year! Due to COVID-19 Pandemic, tutoring was held virtually. CyMath partnered with Moulton Elementary from Des Moines Public Schools (DMPS) District and had 14 participants in the first year and 35 in the second.
