Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a program cost?

No, the program is free to participants and is valued at over $700 per student.

What is ALEKS?

ALEKS is an online learning platform that is adaptative to each student’s needs.

What students can participate in CyMath?

For the 2024-2025 academic year, we are accepting applications from 3rd-grade through 5th grade students at Sawyer Elementary. We are partnering with Ames Community School District and the Sawyer Elementary teachers to engage youth and families. If your child is attending a different school in the Ames Community School District your child can still join, but will currently need to be transported to Sawyer. We are hoping to expand to other schools or to be able to offer bussing in the future, but that is currently not available.

What do students need to participate in CyMath?

Students will need access to an electronic device (Desktop, Laptop, Tablet), an area to work, traditional school supplies (notebook, pens, pencils, calculator, etc.), a positive attitude, and a desire to have fun! Materials are provided during in-person sessions. Support is available for those without a computer or Internet access. Please inquire.

What is the time commitment for students?

Students will participate in at least one hour-long weekly tutoring sessions. In addition, students are asked to spend 1.0 – 1.5 hours each week working on the ALEKS software application. There is an online option on Thursdays and Saturdays for students who can’t make it to Sawyer or would like extra tutoring (see Events for times)
